Combining the virtues of a deli and informal restaurant (open from breakfast onwards) Delifonseca make the most of its spacious location at the bottom end of Liverpool’s waterfront – about a 20-minute walk from Albert Dock. Now boasting a sparkling new extension, it’s a versatile place for bigger groups and families. You can arrive via the ‘Aladdin’s cave of delights’ that is the deli (‘dangerous!’) or directly into the restaurant where there’s a mid-century feel to the decor: plain dark-wood tables, striking pale-green upholstered seating, banquettes as a room divider, a bar running almost the full length. A printed menu with sandwiches and sharing deli platters shows the way during the day, with eclectic, globally inclined specials chalked up on several boards. Rare-roasted Welsh Black beef with a light drizzle of basil-infused extra-virgin olive oil and shavings of Parmesan, a nicely cooked fillet of salmon served atop a deeply flavoured mini casserole of chickpeas and chorizo, and a generous dish of pumpkin stuffed with spiced lentils, chestnuts and wild rice (plus a side of ‘delicious’ red cabbage) were standouts at inspection, and there’s a nifty crème brûlée or sticky toffee pudding to finish. Service is friendly, efficient and down to earth. To drink, there are lots of speciality beers, plus some aptly chosen wines taken from the lower price points of the deli selection (perhaps an excellent Verdicchio), with 125ml glasses starting at £5.
