According to one visitor, the building that the Freckled Angel now occupies on Dale Street in Menai Bridge ‘looks like a flat-pack evangelical church', especially with the restaurant’s winged logo mounted above the porch and on the grey stone of the second storey. Inside, it morphs into a busy, welcoming bar and restaurant, set over two floors. Run with great efficiency, it’s a well-supported venue for modern Brit-accented tapas plates with a global slant. There’s 'something for everyone' on Mike Jones’ menu, the food is genuinely good and it's a real bargain. Good calls have included soy-braised pork belly with satay sauce and charred cucumber, as well as an exemplary spiced duck breast with confit leg, red cabbage and sherry vinegar – although the acknowledged hit of our inspection dinner was a twice-baked Perl Las soufflé in a cream and Pearl Las sauce with a drizzle of balsamic adding much-needed sweetness and acidity to cut through the rich cheese. Eight spears of charred asparagus covered in an egg, gherkin and caper dressing made a perfect accompaniment, while a warm brownie served under a half-sphere of dense, rich parfait and surrounded by chocolate crumb, roasted hazelnut pieces and passion-fruit jam made a fitting finale. To drink, there are local ales and wines from £20.
