Café

Bypass the pre-packaged sandwiches and overpriced coffee at Leeds train station and make the two-minute walk to Laynes – an all-day café that has been a pillar of the city's indie scene since 2011. If you have time, there are buckwheat pancakes, sweetcorn fritters and Turkish eggs for brunch as well as heartier lunch dishes such beef shin ragù with polenta to linger over. The counter is a tempting advertisement for the excellent seasonal baking produced at Laynes own bakery – their beetroot and pistachio Danish and a bouncy Leeds bun, stuffed with rhubarb jam and Chantilly, both hit the mark when we called in. Good coffee (from a rotating selection of roasters) is at the heart of things.
