Part of the Peckham-based Kudu Collective group set up by Amy Corbin and Patrick Williams, Little Kudu lives up to its name, tucked under the arches of Queens Road station. The painted brick-and-tiled interior is spare, modest and modern, offering some counter seating in front of the open-to-view kitchen and bar stools for perching elsewhere – though there are a few comfortable, low-slung tables out front under an awning. With friendly, easy-going staff running the show, it's the sort of place given over to dead-simple informal eating and drinking – tasty food, with a trademark South African influence, backed up by a brief, interesting list of South African wines. Small and large plates (for sharing) mix spicy, curry flavours with charring (braai) and a bit of chilli heat in dishes that are predominantly modern European classics. Highights at inspection included the following: braised leeks served with a dollop of smoked cod's roe and chervil; pig’s head croquettes dotted with vivid-green, wild garlic aïoli; and ham hock terrine with a tangy artichoke piccalilli and crisp pork scratchings. Braaibroodjie (a South African-style grilled cheese sandwich) made with Baron Bigod was a moreish umami hit, while a larger dish of braai courgette with ricotta, spiced honey and cashew dukkah was a lovely amalgamation of freshness, flavour and texture. We also enjoyed sharing an apricot tarte tatin with elderflower and crème fraîche ice cream – the perfect finish. Interesting cocktails included the Saffa-Rita (salt-sour with a hint of chilli), which went well with a snack of Kalahari-spiced biltong; there's also a decent selection of wines by the glass.
