The Bell at Selsley

Stroud, Gloucestershire

Rating: Good

Modern British | Pub with rooms

Mark Payne and Sarah Watts’s upbeat rural pub with rooms commands a prime hilltop position overlooking the Woodchester Valley. It’s a heart-warming hostelry, staying true to its roots with a rustic bar, wood burners, real ales, and a kitchen that is dedicated to offering value for money across the board. It also puts the emphasis on seasonal ingredients from the locality (including pickings from Mark’s allotment). The menu’s backbone of pub classics (lunchtime sandwiches, baked mushroom rarebit, fish and chips) is enlivened by more ambitious dishes ranging from seared wood pigeon breast with barley risotto and trompettes to slow-cooked blade of beef with parsley mash and roasted carrot. Also look out for the ‘catch of the day’, simply accompanied by herb dressing, spinach and new potatoes. To finish, apple crumble and fig tarte tatin have been singled out from a ‘superb range’ of desserts. Engaging service helps things along nicely. The workmanlike wine list includes representatives from the local Woodchester Valley Vineyard, but also check out the pub’s bespoke gin bar.
