A stone’s throw from England’s most perfect Norman church, and nestled deep in the Herefordshire countryside, this 'hidden gem' is a rural destination that's 'well worth the drive out'. It's a dependable pub (with rooms) for all seasons – snuggle by the fire in the flagstoned bar in winter or soak up the garden sun when the weather cooperates. Appropriately, there's also a varied and seasonal menu showcasing 'first-class, low-mileage local ingredients' such as Wye Valley asparagus and Herefordshire beef. Kitchen garden staples elevate the seemingly simple starters, from lovage mayonnaise with that asparagus (and crispy duck egg) to a sharp but earthy beetroot ketchup with ox-cheek croquettes. At inspection, the cooking of a sirloin steak and rare-breed pork chop was a 'triumph', the latter served with a black-pudding croquette, apple sauce and wild-garlic mash, and we defy anyone to resist the rosemary-salted chips. The dessert menu offers many old favourites such as sticky toffee pud, panna cotta and chocolate fondant, but the 'lighter than air' brioche bread and butter pudding steals the show. Pickled quail’s eggs with celery salt are the perfect snack to accompany a local ale or some wine before dinner, with the list boasting a couple of vibrant Welsh vintages as well as a local Herefordshire sparkler.
