To reach this cheery townhouse basement not far from Bath Abbey, clatter down a steep staircase from the street. Once inside, you'll discover several interconnecting rooms done out in authentic Nepalese style – a glorious clutter of native carvings, sculptures, utensils, paintings, prints and floor cushions. The decorative screens put up between tables during the pandemic have also become a permanent feature of the restaurant – by popular request. The kitchen specialises in genuine Nepalese home cooking, and it’s the real deal with subtle spicing, lots of fresh herbs and a strong emphasis on vegetables. Eat without meat by ordering a handful of dishes such as crispy kale pakoras with piquant tomato chutney, butternut squash with braised chickpeas and turmeric, or aloo tamar (fermented bamboo shoots braised with black-eyed peas, new potatoes and tomato). If flesh is your craving, look to the pork momo (steamed dumplings), peppery chicken bhutuwa or the signature Yak Yeti Yak stir-fried beef. To drink, order a bottle of Nepalese Kuwa beer flavoured with citrussy timur (a wild Himalayan spice) or go for the boozy kick of a rum and banana lassi.
