No expense has been spared on the conversion of this former printworks into a stylish, relaxed haven. The exposed stone walls look good as new – a warm, pale, clean finish bolstered by fresh woodwork – while the upper floor has a pitched, beamed ceiling. It’s informal, too, with a well-stocked bar and stylish rustic seating – equally good for a quick drink and a nibble or a full meal. With that in mind, the menu is based around small plates, drawing in premium local ingredients and global influences. You’ll find plenty of favourites, too, from roast chicken Caesar salad (bursting with fresh leaves and Parmesan, the chicken skin blackened and umami-rich) to organic steak, cooked pink and served on a big field mushroom in a punchy peppercorn sauce – perfect with a dish of triple-cooked chips and garlic mayo. If meat isn’t your thing, consider pan-fried Parmesan gnocchi with tomato vinaigrette and capers, or a generous helping of carrots, roasted to sweet richness, then served with harissa and smoked soured cream. On the seafood front, freshness is the watchword – maybe a plump, local Atlantic Edge oyster perked up with gherkin and green chilli, or roast cod alongside fennel, red pepper and chorizo. Try to find room for dessert: a coconut rice pudding with poached pineapple and passion fruit delivered a lively take on comfort food for one visitor, while a beguling tonka-bean panna cotta came with a profusion of juicy seasonal strawberries and a sprinkling of crunchy meringue. Staff are efficient, friendly and attentive. The wine list offers about 25 international options – largely familiar favourites but with some interesting finds too, and plenty of choice by the glass.
